'Happy Family' by caesar120 'Happy Family' by caesar120
Illustration for West End Games: Star Wars RPG. A depiction of Han, Leia, the Twins, and Uncle Chewie. Created a minor controversy with this one. After initial approval by LucasFilms I was asked at the last moment to alter the breastfeeding element of this illustration. So I added the piece of shirt (See bottom right of image) to Leia's chest. I was informed that "...We don't know how infants are fed in the Star Wars universe". Hmm...apparently all those breasts are simply decorative!

...they said what?
Seriously, the most and ONLY slightly disturbing thing is that this picture makes me think, if I had kids, I would hire Chewbacca as a babysitter anytime without a single thought. ^__^

I kid you not, Nicola! *smile* And I second your thoughts regarding Chewie. He'd make a fabulous Sitter...but NOT such a good wet-nurse!

Lovely picture and scene, but that shit about LucasFilms not knowing how infants are fed in SW universe?! Why is that even an issue? Leia breastfeeds the twins in The Last Command and Mara breastfeeds Ben too in one of the novels. It's too bad, because one of the things I most like about this image is the quiet family-moment of it which really includes the breastfeeding.

I'm glad you like it, Klara. It certainly was my intent to create an atmosphere of a serene and touching family moment. I stayed true to the Zahn text. Didn't really understand the breastfeeding hang-up...but it sure makes for a funny story!

They also apparently don't wear underwear in space, according to Carrie Fisher, so this doesn't surprise me. ;) Excellent work, regardless. :D

Wow so Lucasfilms say that they don't know how babies are fed in the Star Wars Universe! What a bunch of BS! Anyway your pic is one awesome piece and it should have been included the way it was done. I think that they (Lucas Films and whomever) to grow up themselves out of their 50's censorship style. Again awesome work Bro!

Thanks, Tony. As you can see I did my best to make the breastfeeding element as inocuous as possible. In fact, it slipped right through the pencil approval process. It wasn't until I pointed it out to my West End Games editor (Steve Crane) that it hit a snag. The scene was fine with him...but he thought it best to bring it to the attention of the Lucasfilm rep before a final OK.

Your welcome Caesar! I tell you what, at first glance you can't really tell until you actually concentrate on Leia. Once you do that and see the whole scene, then you realise what is happening. Also you hid other aspects of the pic, like how the baby is placed which you could think he is just sleeping there and Leia could be looking at him. You did not made her areola which would be a give away, as most women who breast feed have theirs a bit larger. Anyway if you did not say it, it probably would have never been noticed right away. I guess with our country sensitivities, I think that the suits at Lucasfilms did not wanted to deal with any "controversial issue". Anyway I still feel that it is so funny that Lucasfilms do not know "how babies are fed" in their own universe. I think they should have contacted George Lucas and asked him directly and see if he knew? Unless he himself would not know because when he thought about this story he was jacked up on weed! I mean we are talking about the late 60's to early 70's when he was writing about this. Well Bro take care!

Typical. We're bombarded with images of breasts all day long, but bring up what their primary evolutionary function is, and people get all weird.

Very nice illustration, regardless!

Yes. Breastfeeding in an approved novel...yet not approved of in an illustration of that exact scene in the novel! *scratching head* Odd.

The community is fine...it was Lucasfilm that vetoed the scene. Not for being indelicate...but because they said the mode of feeding infants is an unknown in the Star Wars universe. Confusing...but very funny!

I know this must have confused you at the time, but what you DIDN'T know is that - behind the scenes - West End was breaking ground on "Cracken's Guide to Infant Nutrition" for the Star Wars RPG. They didn't want you running about, jiggling "your" breasts willy-nilly and hemming in their design options.

That's what I recall too. I was assigned that paragraph to provide an illustration, and I tried to be really respectful by depicting it in as innocuous a fashion as possible. I was successful in doing so, because the illustration was initially approved in the pencil stage. I had to point it out to the art director...who in turn, went back to LucasFilms...who then rejected the breastfeeding idea. I was understandably confused because they had already approved of it in the novel!

That figures. Since breastfeeding infants was clearly established (and accepted by LucasFilms) in the Zahn novel...then it's Star Wars fact!

Aww! This was always one of my favorites! I believe it was in the "The Last Command" Sourcebook if I remember correctly. I never paid enough attention (I was pretty young back then!) to notice the piece of shirt of the baby's position. So that's a neat little factoid. I hope to see the rest of my favorites pop up on your page! I'll fave them all!
